I guess the rumour mill was right for once. The Macbook Air was revealed, filling up the much needed gap between the high end Macbook Pro and the basic Macbook. But at $1799, it seems a little too steep, especially because the features are pretty much the same as your basic Macbook, and the lack of an optical drive.
It’s all about wireless, this one. With abilities such as ‘Remote disk’ that lets you ‘borrow’ someone else’s drive, it’s a technological wonder. Stunningly beautiful. But so is the Optimus Maximus. We’re excited, but not exactly rushing to buy one, are we?
The problem I see at the moment is the phenomenal drop in Apple’s share as the news unfolded.
Shares (literally) fell (they’re slowly coming back up while writing this). I guess people don’t like the Air as much as Apple hoped.
I don’t like it a lot right now, and my personal opinion is that they made a mistake with it. Apple has clearly gone for the sleek factor, trying to make its presence felt in the ‘thin’ category. Its only competitor being Sony (I’m taking looks into account as well), those who want a visually breath-taking computer should go with this. But, you gotsta have the pockets for this one.

As a power user without money to shell out for looks, I think I’ll settle for a VAIO or the like. I don’t care about looks. I just need the brains. Macbook just doesn’t suit my usage patterns, primarily because I’m a diehard gamer.
Of course, I need a PC or PS3 if I’m a hardcore gamer. I have a PC with a GPU powerful enough to make Crysis a treat to watch.
Still, I would prefer Windows/Linux based laptops to Macbooks.
Settle for a VAIO?
If you’re a gamer, you’ll want to buy the Macbook Pro over the VAIO. It’s cheaper (yes, trust me), and it runs everything. Literally, everything. More bang for your buck.
If you’re a hardcore gamer, you shouldn’t be buying a laptop in the first place. A desktop is the logical choice, much more power. But if you want portability with power, and want good value for your money, the Macbook Pro is the way to go.
I speak from experience, and I haven’t regretted it :)
Don’t you ever read the comments completely? :p I do have a PC for my immediate gaming needs. That too with a GeForce 8600GT :D
But I need a laptop for portable usage (that includes a little bit of gaming :P) How can a Macbook run anything? Games are made for PC and will run on PC only or on some lame emulators, which will take up half the processing power.
Macbook is not cheap. It costs 1800 dollars. Vaio won’t cost more than 1200 dollars. I don’t see any value for money in Macbook, because the only premium I see is that it has OSX and it looks flashy.
@Deepak » I didn’t mean ‘you’, when I said you. I meant anyone (in general). And a Macbook can run anything with Windows installed on it, better than any computer for the same price can. Plus, you’ll get OS X, which is far superior OS, and one that ‘only’ runs on the Macbook.
But again, this argument doesn’t hold because if you want to play games, an Apple is not for you. We all know that. But things will change soon enough. EA is making games for macs now, and they don’t use Cider (in case anybody wants to argue that). There are plenty games available for the mac even now, including the likes of Gears of War. More will follow suit :)
Oh. you mean I can boot separately into Windows? That’s news to me, and will solve the problems, I guess. But will that void any warranty that Apple gives us?
You didn’t know that? :P It’s a feature in OS X, so no warranty issues ;)
